Catching Up

For the past year or two I’ve paid no attention to this website. I had maintained it to keep track of my journalism.  But I found that story links were often broken in the passage of time. That greatly limited its utility but perhaps not entirely.

So here’s a quick rundown of stories I haven’t bothered to post.

In June 2024, Isthmus published my story on Kiki Schueler’s 400th house concert. (Also, this sidebar.) Music is dear to my heart, and for years I wrote an annual fan’s notes on my favorite concerts. Covid ended that tradition. This was a brief return.

Chronicling the local medical software giant Epic Systems is a longtime interest of mine. The Federal Trade Commission’s ban on noncompete clauses, under legal appeal as I write this, prompted this story from May 2024 and the revelation that Epic had voluntarily rolled back it’s onerous noncompete policy.

How onerous? This award-winning  cover story from June 2023 broke the news that former Epic employes were blocked for a year or two from taking jobs in more than 4,500 companies, the vast majority of them in health care. This exacted a professional toll on the former employees and arguably retarded the growth of the local tech industry.

The Milwaukee Press Club, in its annual contest, cited the account as the best business story of 2023. Another Isthmus cover story documented how Epic’s partnership with Microsoft bode well for Epic’s future. Executives at both companies predicted artificial intelligence could eventually trim hours a day from physician administrative tasks.

The last untouted story on this website was something different: my account of celebrated chef Odessa Piper’s return to Madison. On a whirlwind visit, she took me on a tour of the Saturday farmer’s market, where decades ago she helped launch what became the “farm to table” movement.
